INTRODUCTION TO THE TOUR
This tour of Olney Market Place primarily covers the period 1800s to 1950s but its content is under continuous development to extend the scope of the information presented.
The original work to 1940 was compiled originally by The Olney History Workshop in the 1980’s. This Workshop’s chosen period made use of personal memories, old photograph and newspapers, county directories and local almanacs, levy (rate) and Poor Law books and the records of local charities.The Olney & District Historical Society are indebted to Elizabeth Knight for permission to reproduce the work on this website.
Data, such as 1891 and 1911 Census details and 1936 and 1951 Register of Electors details, have since been added to substantiate and augment the earlier work. Also many historical photographs have been added, many of which were supplied by Alan Richardson to whom the Society is also indebted for his permission to include them on this website.
